Florida governor

After the clear election victory against the Republican George E. Gay Hardee began his four-year term on January 4, 1921. During his reign, the system of lending convicts for forced labor was abolished. In Florida, six new counties were created and the state constitution was revised. The changes mainly affected the tax system and the State House of Representatives. That was when the first petroleum tax was introduced in Florida. The electric chair became the legal method of execution in Florida.

Further life

The Florida Constitution did not allow direct re-election of a governor. Therefore, Hardee had to resign from his office on January 5, 1925 after his term expired. He retired to Live Oak and returned to his private business. In 1932 he applied again for the office of governor, but failed in the primary elections as third place. He spent the rest of his life in Live Oak, where he died in November 1957. Cary Hardee was married to Maud Randle. Hardee County in Florida is named after him.
