James Taliaferro
James Piper Taliaferro (born September 30, 1847 in Orange , Orange County , Virginia , † October 6, 1934 in Jacksonville , Florida ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Florida in the US Senate .
After completing his education, James Taliaferro joined the Confederate Army in 1864 , for which he fought until the end of the Civil War. In 1866 he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked in the lumber trade and pursued other businesses. He also made his living in railroad construction and later became president of the First National Bank of Tampa .
Taliaferro's political career began in 1899 with the election to the Washington Senate , of which he was a member from April 20 of that year; at the original beginning of the term of office on March 4, the seat was initially vacant. After being re-elected in 1904, he ran again in 1910, but this time did not win a majority in the Florida state legislature, which at that time still elected the senators, and thus had to resign from Congress on March 3, 1911 . During his tenure in the Senate, he chaired several committees.
As a result, James Taliaferro withdrew from politics. He returned to business activity and retired in 1920.
