William Hall Milton

William Hall Milton (born March 2, 1864 in Marianna , Jackson County , Florida , † January 4, 1942 in Marianna) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Florida in the United States Senate.

Life

William Milton first attended the public schools in Jackson County and then the Marianna Academy , a private school, before continuing his education at the Agricultural and Mechanical College in Auburn , later Auburn University . From 1885 to 1893 he was an official in the service of the city of Marianna and was among other things its treasurer. During this time he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1890. Between 1890 and 1894 he worked as a court commissioner . He also went into banking.

Politics and public offices

Milton's political career began with membership in the Florida House of Representatives from 1889 to 1891. In 1892 he was a member of the Electoral College for the Democrats , which Grover Cleveland elected US President . From 1894 to 1897 Milton served as head of the state surveying authority for Florida ( Surveyor General ); thereafter he was president of the governing body of the state reformatory in Marianna until 1902. Between 1898 and 1899 he also held the office of mayor of his hometown.

In 1900, Milton first ran for the office of governor of Florida, but was defeated by his internal party opponent William Sherman Jennings . Another unsuccessful candidacy followed in 1912. In the meantime, William Milton was a member of the US Senate as a representative of his state, where he succeeded the late William James Bryan on March 27, 1908 . He remained in Congress until March 3, 1909 and did not run for re-election.

Milton went back to work as a lawyer. He was also active in the real estate and insurance industries. From 1916 to 1917 he was a member of the Marianna City Council; In 1923 he was named the United States Commissioner for the Northern District of Florida, which he remained until his death. He also worked for the local welfare agency from 1937 to 1942.
