Lake City is a city and also the county seat of Columbia County in the US state of Florida with 12,046 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Due to its location on Interstate 75 and several railroad lines, the city is known as The Gateway to Florida .

geography

Lake City is located about 85 km west of Jacksonville in northern Florida.

history

The place where Lake City stands today was already inhabited by Native Americans, the Seminoles , and they called it Alpata Telophka , which means something like city ​​of alligators . In 1830 a new settlement was established nearby. This settlement was integrated and has been known as Lake City since 1859. The Battle of Olutsee in the American Civil War took place very nearby in 1864 and was the only major battle in Florida during the war.

The railroad age began in Lake City in 1860 when the Florida, Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad completed a railway line from here to Jacksonville . In 1861 the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad closed the gap to Tallahassee and in 1883 the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad reached Pensacola . From 1885 onwards, the city developed into an important railway junction with the construction of the Macon ( Georgia ) to Palatka railway via Lake City by the Georgia Southern & Florida Railroad .

Religions

Lake City currently has 51 different churches from 14 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 16 churches. There are also 5 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 12,046 inhabitants were distributed over 5,539 households. The population density was 439.6 inh / km². 56.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 37.3% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 1.6% as Asian Americans . 1.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 5.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 34.4% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 26.7% of all households. 59.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.39 people and the average family size was 3.05 people.

28.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 47.6% of the population were male and 52.4% were female.

The median annual income was $ 30,812, with 22.8% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the native language of 96.58% of the population, 3.03% spoke Spanish and 0.39% spoke German .

The metropolitan area is crossed by Interstates 10 and 75 , US Highways 41 ( SR 25 ), 90 ( SR 10 ) and 441, and Florida State Roads 10A , 47 , 100 and 247 .

Until 2005, the Lake City station was a station of the Sunset Limited of the Amtrak railroad company from Orlando to Los Angeles . However, after the effects of Hurricane Katrina , the line was shortened to the New Orleans - Los Angeles route. Since then, the only rail transport has consisted of goods transports, which are carried out by the railway company CSX Transportation .

The city has its own airport, Lake City Gateway Airport . The nearest international airport is Jacksonville International Airport (around 105 km east).

The crime rate in 2010 was 597 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were three murders, six rapes, 27 robberies, 152 assaults, 175 break-ins, 581 thefts, 21 car thefts and two arson attacks.
