Alcee Lamar Hastings (born September 5, 1936 in Altamonte Springs , Florida ) is an American lawyer and politician . Since 1993 he has represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alcee Hastings attended the Crooms Academy in Sanford until 1953 and then studied at Fisk University in Nashville ( Tennessee ) until 1958 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in his new profession. Until 1963 he also studied at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee . Politically, Hastings became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1970 he failed in his party's primary for election to the US Senate .

From 1977 to 1979 Hastings was a district judge in Broward County . He then served as a judge at the federal district court for the southern part of the state of Florida from 1979 to 1989 . During this time he came under suspicion of corruption. In 1981 he was acquitted of this suspicion. Investigations continued, however, and in 1989 Hastings was dismissed from the US Senate for bribery and perjury. However, he was not prohibited from continuing to hold other public offices.

Despite this affair, Hastings became active again in politics. In 1990 he ran for the office of Secretary of State of Florida, but was defeated by the Republican incumbent James C. Smith . In the 1992 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the newly created 23rd  constituency of his state , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1993. After twelve re-elections so far, he can still exercise his mandate in Congress today. After he was also confirmed in the congressional elections in 2016 , he will take up another two-year term on January 3, 2017. Since 2013 he has represented the 20th constituency of his state.

Hastings was or is a member of the Rules Committee and one of its sub-committees, and of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe .

Alcee Hastings is divorced and lives privately in Miramar .
