Lawrence J. Smith

Lawrence Jack Smith (born April 25, 1941 in New York City ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1993 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lawrence Smith attended public schools in East Meadow, New York State . Between 1958 and 1961 he studied at New York University . After completing a law degree at Brooklyn Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1964, he began to work in his new profession in New York City. Since 1972 he has practiced as a lawyer in Florida.

Smith joined the Democratic Party . From 1974 to 1978 he was chairman of the Hollywood City Planning Committee . Between 1978 and 1982 he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives . Smith was a delegate to seven Democratic National Conventions from 1980 to 2004 . In the 1982 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the then newly created 16th  constituency of Florida , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1983. After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 .

In 1992 Smith declined to run again. In the following years he no longer appeared politically. Today he lives in Hollywood.
