John Rutherford (2017)

John Rutherford (born September 2, 1952 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Since 1958, John Rutherford has lived with his family in Jacksonville . He graduated from Florida Junior College and then majored in criminology at Florida State University . He also attended the FBI National Academy for some time . Between 1974 and 2003 he served in the Jacksonville City Police Department, where he rose to Captain. During this time he headed various police departments in his hometown. In 2003 he was elected the new sheriff there. He held this office until he took office as a congressman.

Politically, Rutherford joined the Republican Party . In the 2016 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the fourth constituency of Florida in Washington, DC , where on January 3, 2017 he succeeded Ander Crenshaw , who was no longer running.
