Louis Arthur "Skip" Bafalis (born September 28, 1929 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American politician . Between 1973 and 1983 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Louis Bafalis attended Manchester Central High School in New Hampshire until 1948 and then St. Anselm's College in Manchester until 1952 . Between 1953 and 1956 he was a soldier in the US Army . After his military service, he worked as an investment banker. In the meantime he moved to Florida. Politically, Bafalis became a member of the Republican Party . In 1964 he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. Between 1966 and 1970, Bafalis was a member of the State Senate . In 1970 he applied unsuccessfully to his party for nomination as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election .

In the 1972 congressional election , Bafalis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Florida , where he succeeded J. Herbert Burke , who moved to the twelfth district, on January 3, 1973 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . In 1982 Bafalis decided against re-election to Congress in favor of running for gubernatorial elections; but he was defeated by the Democratic incumbent Bob Graham with 35:65 percent of the vote. In the following years he worked for a political consultancy firm.
