Daniel Andrew "Dan" Mica (born February 4, 1944 in Binghamton , New York ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1989 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Daniel Mica is the younger brother of John Mica , who has represented the seventh constituency of Florida in Congress since 1993 . The younger Mica attended the Horace Mann School in his native Binghamton until 1950 . He later graduated from Miami Edison High School in Florida. Until 1961 he studied at the University of Florida in Gainesville and then until 1966 at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton . Between 1966 and 1968 he worked as a teacher in Florida and Maryland . From 1968 to 1978 he was on the staff of Congressman Paul G. Rogers .

Unlike his brother, who is a Republican , Daniel Mica is a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1978 congressional elections , he was elected to the Eleventh District of Florida in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Paul G. Rogers on January 3, 1979. After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1989 . Since 1983 he has represented the 14th district of his state there as the successor to Claude Pepper . During his time in Congress, Mica was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee .

In 1988, Mica declined to run for the US House of Representatives. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for his party's nomination for the US Senate election , which instead went to Buddy MacKay . After leaving Congress, Mica became a member and vice president of the American Council of Life Insurance . He held this office until 1996. In July 1996, he became chairman of the board of the Credit Union National Association . Daniel Mica is married and has four children.
