Charles Memorial Hamilton
Charles Memorial Hamilton (born November 1, 1840 in Pine Creek , Clinton County , Pennsylvania , † October 22, 1875 there ) was an American politician . Between 1868 and 1871 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Charles Hamilton attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at the Law School of the City of Columbia . During the civil war he was a soldier in the Union Army . In the course of the war he became head of the military legal department ( Judge Advocate ) in the Potomac Army . Then he was on the staff of the military commander responsible for the area of the federal capital. In 1865, Hamilton was transferred to Marianna in occupied Florida. There he worked as a lawyer from 1867.
Politically, Hamilton was a member of the Republican Party . After Florida was re-admitted to the Union, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in 1868 in what was then the only constituency of the state , where he took up his new mandate on July 1, 1868. After being re-elected in the regular congressional elections in 1868 , he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time the 14th and 15th amendments to the constitution were passed there.
In 1870, Hamilton was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. A year later he was appointed major general in the state militia. From 1871 to 1872, Hamilton was also the post office owner for the City of Jacksonville . He then headed the Customs Department in Key West . However, he had to give up this position for health reasons. Charles Hamilton died on October 22, 1875 in his native Pine Creek.
