Alan Mark Grayson (born March 13, 1958 in the Bronx , New York City ) is an American politician . He has been a member of the House of Representatives in the 9th Congressional District of Florida since 2013 . This mandate expired on January 3, 2017, after he stopped running in 2016 in order to pursue an unsuccessful Senate candidacy. Between 2009 and 2011 he represented the 8th Congressional District of Florida .

Career

Alan Grayson first attended the Bronx High School of Science and then studied law at Harvard University until 1983 . In 1983 he was employed as a law clerk at the Colorado Supreme Court . From 1984 to 1985 he worked in the same capacity at the Federal Court of Appeals for the Washington, DC District Court . In the following years he worked as a lawyer and businessman. Politically, Grayson joined the Democratic Party . In 2006 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the 2008 congressional elections , Grayson was elected to the House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Florida, where he succeeded Republican Ric Keller on January 3, 2009 . Since he was not confirmed in the 2010 elections , he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 2011 . There he was a member of the Finance Committee and the Science and Technology Committee, as well as some of their sub-committees. In Congress he essentially represented the positions of his party. Among other things, he was a staunch opponent of the Iraq war and the deployment in Afghanistan .

In the 2012 election, he won the seat of the 9th Congressional District of Florida and returned to the House of Representatives. After being re-elected in 2014, he is expected to be able to exercise his mandate until January 3, 2017. On July 9, 2015, he announced his intention to run for the US Senate in 2016 . However, he lost the Democratic primary against his colleague in the House of Representatives Patrick Murphy in August 2016 .

Since 2013 Grayson has been a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the United States House Committee on Science, Space and Technology , as well as a total of four subcommittees.

Alan Grayson is married with five children.
