Stephanie Murphy (born September 16, 1978 in Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, she has been representing the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stephanie Murphy fled her Vietnamese homeland in a boat in 1979 with her parents, where the family had lived in a refugee camp. After their boat got stuck on the high seas due to lack of fuel, they were rescued by a United States Navy ship. The family later settled in the northern part of the state of Virginia . From 1996 to 2000 she studied economics and international relations at the College of William and Mary . Between 2002 and 2004 she was enrolled at Georgetown University , where she studied foreign policy. She took on a number of advisory posts and worked for the United States Department of Defense from 2004 to 2008. Since 2008 she has been a member of the board of Sungate Capital as Management Director . Since 2014 she has also been teaching economics at Rollins College . She is married and has two kids. She has her residence in Winter Park .

Politically, Murphy joined the Democratic Party . In the 2016 congressional election , she was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Florida , where on January 3, 2017, she succeeded longtime Republican incumbent John Mica , whom she defeated in the election. She is the first female Congresswoman of Vietnamese descent.
