William Dawson "Bill" Gunter (born July 16, 1934 in Jacksonville , Florida ) is an American politician . Between 1973 and 1975 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bill Gunter attended the public schools at Live Oak and by 1956 the University of Florida at Gainesville . He then studied until 1957 at the University of Georgia in Athens . In 1957 and 1958 Gunter served as a soldier in the US Army . Subsequently he worked as a teacher, businessman and farmer. At that time he became chairman of the nationwide association Future Farmers of America .

Politically, Gunter joined the Democratic Party . Between 1966 and 1972 he was a member of the Florida Senate . In the 1972 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Florida , where he succeeded Louis Frey , who moved to the ninth district, on January 3, 1973 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1974, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1975 . This was determined by the events of the Watergate affair .

In 1974 he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for the US Senate elections , which instead went to Richard Stone . Between 1976 and 1988 he was Treasury Secretary and Insurance Commissioner for the Florida Government. In addition, as Fire Marshal, he was responsible for the fire services of his state. In 1980 he was defeated in the US Senate election to Republican Paula Hawkins ; In 1988 his last attempt to be elected to the Senate failed when he was defeated in the primary of his party Buddy MacKay .

For the past several years Bill Gunter has worked for a Tallahassee- based insurance agency. He is also a member of various trade associations and works as a lobbyist.
