Charles Downing (* in Virginia ; †  1845 in St. Augustine , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the Florida Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Downing's date and place of birth are unknown, as is the exact date of his death. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in his new profession in St. Augustine, Florida. In 1837 he became a member of the Territorial Government Council.

In the congressional election of 1836 Downing was elected as a delegate for the Florida Territory to Congress in Washington, DC , where he replaced Joseph M. White on March 4, 1837 . After being re-elected in 1838, he was able to complete two legislative terms there until March 3, 1841. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Downing no longer appeared. He died in St. Augustine in 1845.
