The Hatzumer Sand is part of the Emsauen nature reserve between the mouth of the Leda and Oldersum and is uninhabited. It is unused (no agricultural or other use by humans) and is almost completely overgrown with reeds . The island is cut in the eastern part by several deep channels .
Administratively, the area belongs to the right-hemisphere municipality of Moormerland , but the flat island is named after the place Hatzum in the municipality of Jemgum on the opposite bank of the Ems .
