Augustus Maxwell

Augustus Emmett Maxwell (born September 21, 1820 in Elberton , Elbert County , Georgia , † May 5, 1903 in Chipley , Florida ) was an American lawyer and politician . He represented the state of Florida as an MP in the US Congress and as a Senator in the Confederate Congress .

Career

Augustus Maxwell graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1841 , where he did his Bachelor of Laws . He was then admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1843 . After practicing as a lawyer in Eutaw, Alabama for some time , he moved to Tallahassee , Florida in 1845 . In the same year Florida became a US state .

Political career

Maxwell was Attorney General of Florida in 1846 and 1847 and Deputy to the Florida House of Representatives in 1847 . He also held the office of Secretary of State of Florida from 1848 to 1849 as the successor to James T. Archer . Between 1849 and 1850 he was a member of the Florida Senate . As a Democrat , Maxwell represented Florida as the successor to Edward Carrington Cabell from 1853 to 1857 in the United States House of Representatives .

After Florida split from the United States to join the Confederate States of America and during the American Civil War , Maxwell served in the first and second Confederate Congresses. Maxwell and Jackson Morton were the only people who represented Florida in both Houses, the US Congress and the Confederate Congress, during their lifetime.

After the war, Maxwell was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of Florida in 1865 , but gave up the office a year later. However, he later returned and served there from 1887 to 1891.

Augustus Maxwell died in Chipley on May 5, 1903. He was buried in Pensacola .

family

Maxwell's grandson Emmett Wilson also represented Florida in the US House of Representatives. His father-in-law Walker Anderson and son Evelyn C. Maxwell both served in Florida's Supreme Court .
