Career

Silas Niblack was a cousin of William E. Niblack (1822-1893), who sat between 1857 and 1875 for the State of Indiana in Congress . He attended the public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1851, he began to work in Lake City (Florida) in his new profession. In the local Columbia County he served temporarily as a debt restructuring judge.

Politically, Niblack was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1870 he was defeated in the first constituency of Florida to the Republican Josiah T. Walls . Niblack appealed against the outcome of the election. In the meantime, Walls took up his seat in Congress on March 4, 1871. There the decision to vote was delayed until January 29, 1873. On that day, the case was decided in favor of Niblack, who was able to end the current legislative period by March 3 of the same year.

In the congressional elections of 1872 he was defeated by Republican William J. Purman , who succeeded him in the US House of Representatives on March 4, 1873. In 1879, Silas Niblack was elected to the Florida Senate. He also worked intensively on agriculture; at the same time still practiced as a lawyer. He died in Lake City on February 13, 1883.
