Ira William "Bill" McCollum (born July 12, 1944 in Brooksville , Hernando County , Florida ) is an American politician . Between 1981 and 2001 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bill McCollum attended Hernando High School until 1962 . After completing a law degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville and being admitted to the bar in 1968, he began to work in his new profession. Between 1969 and 1972 he served in the legal department of the US Navy , whose reserve he was a member until 1992.

Politically, McCollum joined the Republican Party . From 1976 to 1980 he was its chairman in Seminole County and the fifth congressional electoral district . Between 1984 and 2000 he was a delegate to all Republican National Conventions . In the 1980 congressional elections , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth district of Florida , where he succeeded Richard Kelly on January 3, 1981 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2001 . Since 1993 he represented the eighth district of his state there as the successor to Bill Young . During his tenure in Congress, he was instrumental in conducting the unsuccessful impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton .

In November 2000, McCollum declined to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for a seat in the US Senate this year and 2004 : first he failed at the Democrat Bill Nelson , then four years later in the Republican primary at Mel Martínez . In the meantime he worked as a lawyer. From January 2, 2007 to January 4, 2011, he succeeded Charlie Crist as Attorney General of Florida. In 2010 he sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections and thus again to succeed Charlie Crist. Although he was long considered a favorite, he was ultimately defeated by Rick Scott, who was later also victorious in the actual election . Bill McCollum is married to Ingrid Seebohm, with whom he has three sons.
