Charles Dougherty (born October 15, 1850 in Athens , Georgia , †  October 11, 1915 in Daytona Beach , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Dougherty attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . Then he went to sea as a seaman. In 1871, he settled near Port Orange , Florida, where he worked as a planter . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1877 and 1885 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from Florida , whose president he was in 1879 as the successor to George G. McWhorter .

In the congressional election of 1884 Dougherty was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Florida , where he succeeded Republican Horatio Bisbee on March 4, 1885 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 . After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Dougherty resumed his previous work as a planter. Between 1891 and 1912 he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives on several occasions. From 1895 to 1898 he was also a member of the State Senate . He died in Daytona Beach on October 11, 1915.
