Alfred "Al" Lawson Jr. (born September 21, 1948 in Midway , Florida ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Al Lawson studied political science at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University until 1970 . He then continued his education until 1973 with a study at Florida State University , where he took the subject public administration. Professionally, he worked in the insurance industry. From 1976 he worked for the life insurance company Northwestern Mutual Financial Network . He also ran his own company, Al Lawson and Associates Incorporated, since 1986 . In his homeland he belongs or belonged to numerous organizations and associations.

Politically, Lawson joined the Democratic Party . Between 1982 and 2000 he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives ; from 2000 to 2010 he was a member of the State Senate . In 2010 and 2012 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives, failing in his party's primaries in 2010 and losing to Republican Steve Southerland in the actual election in 2012 .

The court-ordered redesign of the congressional electoral districts proved to be a godsend for Al Lawson. The Florida Supreme Court found the 5th Congressional District to be unconstitutional due to gerrymandering. The new 5th Congressional constituency stretches along the northern border of Florida and connects Jacksonville and Al Lawson's Tallahassee. For comparison: the 2nd constituency in which he ran twice without success had a PVI of R + 6 - the new 5th congressional constituency is a Black Minority Majority District with a PVI of D + 12.

In the 2016 congressional election , Lawson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Florida , where he succeeded Corrine Brown , whom he defeated in his party's primary election, on January 3, 2017 .
