James A. Haley (1964)

James Andrew Haley (born January 4, 1899 in Jacksonville , Alabama , †  August 6, 1981 in Sarasota , Florida ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Haley was born in Jacksonville where he attended public school. He then studied at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and had to interrupt his studies because of the First World War . In August 1917 he enlisted in Troop A, second cavalry. After that, he served overseas.

After the war he was employed in Sarasota from 1920 to 1933 as an auditor. He then worked from 1933 to 1943 as managing director of the John Ringling estates. He then became the first Vice President of Ringling Circus and later President and Director of Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Amp. This position he held between 1943 and 1945. He then worked from 1946 to 1948 for the Bailey Circus in Sarasota. He also published a newspaper and later worked in the general printing business.

Between 1935 and 1952 he was Democratic Chairman in Sarasota County . He was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1949 to 1952 and was a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions from 1952 to 1960 . Haley was elected a Democrat in the 83rd and 11 subsequent conventions. His tenure lasted from January 3, 1953 to January 3, 1977. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs ( 93rd and 94th Congress ). He was also involved in the 1956 constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Haley did not run again for the 95th Congress in 1976 .

Haley had been married to Aubrey Barlow Ringling (née Black), widow of Richard Ringling, son of one of the founders of the Ringling Circus, since 1942.

James Haley died on August 6, 1981 in Sarasota. He was buried in Boca Raton .
