Charles William "Bill" Young (born December 16, 1930 in Harmarville , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , † October 18, 2013 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician ( Republican ). From 1971 until his death he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

At the age of 15, Bill Young moved to Saint Petersburg , Florida. Between 1948 and 1957 he served in the Army National Guard . He then began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1960 and 1970 Young was a member of the Florida Senate ; since 1966 he led the republican faction there. In 1965 and 1967, Young was on a commission charged with revising the Florida constitution. At that time he was also a member of a committee that prosecuted and publicly pilloried homosexuals ( Florida Legislative Investigation Committee ). In connection with this, some university professors and teachers in Florida lost their jobs. Between 1968 and 1984 he was a delegate at all Republican National Conventions with one exception in 1980 .

In the 1970 congressional election , Young was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of Florida , where he succeeded William C. Cramer on January 3, 1971 . After 21 re-elections, he exercised his mandate in Congress until his death in 2013 and was most recently considered the most influential Florida congressman who was particularly good at acquiring federal subsidies ("earmarks"). He died the senior Republican Congressman. After he announced on October 9, 2013 that he would not run again in the 2014 election, he would have left office in January 2015. His death necessitates an early by-election for his seat in parliament. Young's departure from Congress gives the Democratic Party a realistic opportunity to conquer this constituency - which President Obama won by one percentage point in 2012 .

During his long time in the US House of Representatives, Bill Young changed his electoral district several times, which was partly due to the restructuring of the districts. From 1993 to 2013 he represented the tenth district and then the 13th district until his death. The end of the Vietnam War , the Watergate Affair and the Iraq War fall during his time as Congressman . The 26th and 27th amendments to the Constitution were also passed during this period . Bill Young served on the Grants Committee and two of its sub-committees. From 1999 to 2005 he was chairman of this committee.

Bill Young was married to Beverly Angello Young, with whom he had three children. The family lives in Indian Shores .
