Brian Jeffery Mast (born July 10, 1980 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Brian Mast graduated from high school and joined the United States Army in 1999 . There he was assigned to a mine clearance unit. He was also deployed in Afghanistan . On September 19, 2010, he was seriously injured there in an accident while clearing mines. Both legs and one finger had to be amputated. In 2011 he retired with honor from the army with the rank of staff sergeant . During his twelve years of service he was awarded several military medals. These included the Purple Heart , the Bronze Star Medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal . After retiring from military service, he was employed as an explosives specialist at the Ministry of Homeland Security . He also studied at Harvard University for some time until 2016 .

Politically, Mast joined the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 2016 he was in the 18th  electoral district of Florida against the Democrats Randy Perkins in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats on January 3, 2017 Patrick Murphy took that in favor of a ( then failed) candidacy for the United States Senate had waived another election to the House of Representatives.

Brian Mast lives in Fort Pierce , St. Lucie County .
