Harry A. Johnston (born December 2, 1931 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) is a former American politician . Between 1989 and 1997 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harry Johnston attended the Virginia Military Institute until 1953 and then served as a lieutenant in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Florida and his admission to the bar in 1958, he began to work in his new profession in West Palm Beach. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1974 and 1986 Johnston was a member of the Florida Senate , of which he had been president since 1984. In 1986 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election .

In the 1988 congressional elections , Johnston was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of Florida , where he succeeded Dan Mica on January 3, 1989 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1997 . Since 1993 he has represented the 19th district of his state there as the successor to Dante Fascell . During his tenure as Congressman, the 27th Amendment to the Constitution was passed in 1992 .

In 1996 Harry Johnston declined to run again. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he retired.
