Charles T. Canady

Charles Terrance Canady (born June 22, 1954 in Lakeland , Florida ) is an American lawyer and politician . Between 1993 and 2001 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Canady attended Haverford College until 1976 . After completing a law degree at Yale Law School and his admission to the bar in 1979, he began working in his new profession in Lakeland. In 1983 and 1984 he was an advisor to the regional planning committee for central Florida. Politically, Canady was initially a member of the Democratic Party . At the end of 1986 he joined the Republicans . From 1984 to 1990 he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives . In 1990 he ran unsuccessfully for the State Senate .

In the 1992 congressional elections , Canady was elected to the 12th constituency of Florida in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Tom Lewis on January 3, 1993 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2001 . In 1998 he was one of the MPs tasked with conducting the unsuccessful impeachment trial against President Bill Clinton . In 2000 Charles Canady declined to run again.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Canady was initially an advisor to Governor Jeb Bush . Since 2002 he has served as a judge at the court of appeal in the second judicial district of his state. In 2008, Charles Canady was appointed as a judge on the Supreme Court of Florida ; since July 2010 he has chaired it as Chief Justice .
