history

Declared for settlement in 1780, Burke was not actually made arable until 1792. The first public building stood on a hill above today's Burke Hollow and contained a church, school and assembly room at the same time. The hill quickly turned out to be too stormy for a settlement, so a new village, Burke Hollow, was built in the valley. From there, the other two settlements of the joint community emerged: West Burke at a fork in the road, East Burke at the foot of Burke Mountain. Originally, this was the largest of the three towns, but this changed with the connection of West Burkes to the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad . The station was a good location for timber loading in a wide area. With the advent of tourism in Vermont at the end of the 19th century, West Burke became the starting point for those seeking relaxation at two large lakes nearby. From 1909, tourism developed in East Burke in connection with the forest area on Burke Mountain. In 1931 Mr. Darling, the owner of large tracts of land on and around Burke Mountain, died and bequeathed it to the state. The Darling State Park was set up on these areas , which in addition to four campsites and a hut village primarily offers Burke Mountain, which has developed into an alpine ski area, as a tourist destination.

religion

Church life is shaped by branches of the United Church of Christ and the Methodists .
