Robert Lee Fulton Sikes (born June 3, 1906 in Sylvester , Worth County , Georgia , † September 28, 1994 in Crestview , Florida ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Sikes graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens in 1927 , where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree . He received his Master of Science degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1929 . After completing his studies, Sikes worked for a publishing house in Crestview between 1933 and 1946. He then sat in the Florida House of Representatives from 1936 to 1940 .

Sikes was elected a Democrat in the 77th and 78th Congresses . He worked there from January 31, 1941 until his resignation on October 9, 1944 and then joined the United States Army . After the war, Sikes continued his political career. He was elected to the 79th and 16 subsequent Congresses. His term of office extended from January 3, 1945 to January 3, 1979, but in 1978 he decided not to run for the 96th Congress . During his tenure, Sikes was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. He was also a delegate to the Interparliamentary Conference in Warsaw in 1959 .
