Nidula , the "Goodenough Island", is located in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea . It is located east of the mainland in the Solomon Sea . Goodenough is one of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands , located near the Trobriand Islands . This island was visited in 1873 by Captain John Moresby , who named it after Commodore James Graham Goodenough .
The closest island, apart from smaller minor islands , is the larger Fergusson Island to the east , from which Goodenough Island is separated from the minimal 3.9 km wide Moresby Strait .
The island is almost circular. It is 39 kilometers long and 26 kilometers wide. Its area is 687 km², the length of the coastline 116 kilometers. From a coastal strip that varies in width between two and ten kilometers, the island rises steeply to the 2,536 m high volcanic cone of Mount Vineuo .
Goodenough is - measured by its area - one of the steepest sloping islands in the world. She is also known for her rock paintings , the "Goodenough Island Cargo Cults". During World War II, Goodenough was an important strategic base for Operation Dexterity .

In 1980, Goodenough Island had 12,676 residents, compared to 19,625 in 2000. Two other villages are on the upstream in the southeast addition island Wagifa : Wagifa 9.495 ° S , 150.3643 ° O with 909 and Yauyaula 9.4974 ° S , 150.376 ° O 280 residents.
Species protection
In the center of the island is the Oi Mada Wara Wildlife Management Area . It has a total area of 22,840 hectares. It provides a critical habitat for several endangered animal species, such as the Goodenough bush kangaroo ( Dorcopsis atrata ) and the agile wallaby ( Macropus agilis ). It is also the distribution area of the black-eye fruit pigeon and the Alberta pigeon .
