The naked-eye fruit pigeon ( Ducula pinon ) is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs in several subspecies on some Southeast Asian islands. Their name is similar in German to that of the naked-eyed pigeon and the range of the two pigeon species also overlaps. The naked-eyed pigeon, however, belongs to the mountain pigeons .

Appearance

The naked-eye fruit pigeon reaches a body length of 44 to 48 centimeters. It is thus slightly larger than a wood pigeon . There is no gender dimorphism. The wax skin is feathered and makes the profile of the pigeon look very straight. The beak is very large and is emphasized by the flatly sloping forehead. The very broad, featherless and red dark circles have led to the name naked eye fruit pigeon.

The plumage is light gray on the front and top of the head. The rest of the head is tinged with pink. The neck, chest and coat plumage is a slightly darker gray. The back and rump are silvery gray. The wings are dark slate gray. The individual feathers here are lined with light gray, so that a striking, scaled pattern is created on the wing covers. The belly is red-brown. The under tail-coverts are of a maroon color.

Spread and behavior

The naked-eye fruit pigeon is found exclusively in New Guinea and some of the neighboring islands. The range includes the islands of Misool , Salawati , Batanta , Waigeo , Aru , Yapen , Kairiru , the Schouten Islands , Manam , Karkar , Bagabag (Papua New Guinea) , Goodenough , Fergusson, Misima , Tagua and Rossel. It is a very common species in parts of this range and usually the most common large pigeon species. However, it may have become extinct on Karkar.

She lives mostly singly or in pairs. However, if individual trees bear particularly abundant fruit, this can lead to an accumulation of naked-eye fruit pigeons. It is a rather conspicuous species that is particularly noticeable in the morning and in the evening when it switches between its feeding grounds and its resting places. She also looks for individual fruit-bearing trees that are isolated in cultivated land. The main food is fruits. Figs play a particularly important role in their diet. It breeds from May to February and thus has a very long reproductive period. The nest is a loosely assembled platform in the treetops and is regularly 11 to 18 meters above the ground. The clutch consists of only one egg.
