Misima , formerly St. Aignan Island , is an island of volcanic origin in the Louisiade Archipelago of the ( Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea ). The island is 40 km long and 10 km wide, and has an area of ​​202.5 km². It is located a good 20 km north of the extreme northwestern barrier reef of Vanatinai , and 80 km northwest of this island. Misima is mountainous and densely forested. At 1,036 meters, Mt. Koia Tau is the highest peak in the Louisiade archipelago.

population

Misima had 14,756 inhabitants at the 2000 census and is the most densely populated island in the archipelago . The main town of Bwagaoia , which is also the seat of the municipal administration for the western part of the Louisiade Archipelago ( Louisiade Rural Local Level Government ), is located on the southeast coast of the island.

The population was spread over 75 villages and three separate institutions, including Bwagaoia Station (near the main town Bwagaoia on the southeast coast) with 734 inhabitants as the second largest settlement. The largest place was Kalotawa on the north coast with 752 inhabitants. In addition, two uninhabited villages and a separate uninhabited facility (a school) were listed.

Public facilities

Misima has an airport , a school , a small market , several small grocery stores and a hospital . However, all facilities are in the main town of the island.

economy

A gold and silver mine was opened on the island in 1990, but closed again in 2004, among other things for reasons of environmental and health protection.

Official languages

The main language on the island is Misima, but the official language is English , which most residents can speak.
