Vanatinai (formerly Sudest , Tagula on many maps ) is an island of volcanic origin in the southeast of the Louisiade archipelago in the Milne Bay province of Papua New Guinea . The island, lined with coral reefs, is 360 km southeast of New Guinea and 35 km southeast of Misima Island .
With an area of 865.7 km², it is the largest island in the archipelago. At the 2000 census there were 19 villages and 5 other institutions with a total of 2,440 inhabitants on the island. Another 116 inhabitants lived on the small, off the south coast offshore island Iyen Island . Another village was listed as uninhabited. For 1978 a population of 2,300 was given. The main export is copra .
The island is 63 km long from Bobo Hai Point in the northwest to Cape Siri in the southeast, and up to 13 km wide. A forested mountain range runs the entire length of the island. The highest peak, Mount Riu (806 m, formerly Mount Rattlesnake), is located near the center. The highest peaks are from southeast to northwest:
- Mount Arumbi (351 m)
- Mount Imau (485 m)
- Mount Riu (806 m)
- Mount Gangulua (439 m)
- Mount Madau (269 m)
Other islands in the Vanatinai lagoon are:
- Pana Tinani , 3 km north of the northwestern headland of Vanatinai,
- the Calvados Islands , a group of 33 islands and some reefs.
The island has a small airport ( IATA code "TGL" ) for public transport, near Rambuso Village.
Gold was found on the island in 1889. This triggered a gold rush as it was found in almost all of the island's waterways.
Various species are endemic to the island , including the Tagula Spectacled Bird , the Louisiana Butcher Bird and the Tagula Honeyeater.
Vanatinai is administratively part of the Yeleyamba Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area in the Samarai-Murua district of Milne Bay Province, and is administered from Bwagaoia on Misima .
