Richard "Rich" Nugent (born May 26, 1951 in Evergreen Park , Illinois ) is an American Republican Party politician . From 2011 to 2017 he represented the central west coast of Florida north of Tampa in the United States House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Rich Nugent was born in Evergreen Park, a suburb of Chicago . After graduating from high school, he served in the Illinois National Guard Air Corps from 1969 to 1975 . From 1984 he worked for the police in Hernando County in Florida. There he rose to the position of deputy chief of police. Between 2001 and 2010 he was the sheriff's chief of police in the district.

Nugent has been married since 1975. He and his wife, Wendy, have three sons, all of whom serve as officers in the US Army .

Political career

In the 2010 election , Nugent was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 5th Congressional constituency in Florida with 67 percent of the vote , where he succeeded Ginny Brown-Waite, who was no longer running for health reasons, on January 3, 2011 .

In Congress he advocated the extension of the expiring parts of the PATRIOT Act ; he is also against any cut in funding for the State of Israel . Nugent is a member of the House of Representatives Tea Party Caucus , the union of Republicans who are close to the Tea Party movement . In January 2015, he was one of the 25 Republican representatives who supported a campaign run by Daniel Webster, also from Florida, as a spokesman against incumbent John Boehner . After the failure of this revolt, Boehner removed Nugent from the influential Rules Committee . After the redesign of the constituencies as a result of the United States Census 2010 , Nugent represented Florida's 11th congressional electoral district from 2013, which geographically largely corresponded to its previous immediately north of Tampa on the west coast of the state.

In November 2015, Nugent announced that he would not run again in the upcoming election to the 2016 House of Representatives and gave family reasons. For the successor, he also assured his previous chief of staff Justin Grabelle support for a candidacy. Congressman Daniel Webster also signaled interest in the Republican-dominated congressional district, which Nugent won with two thirds of the votes in the November 2014 election (and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney with 59 percent of the vote) after his previous 10th congressional district a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court had been revised and thereby retained a voting structure that was clearly in favor of the Democrats. The 2014 Democratic rival candidate, Dave Koller, ran again but was defeated by Webster, who succeeded Nugent on January 3, 2017.
