Katherine Harris (* 5. April 1957 in Key West , Florida ) is an American politician of the Republican Party .

Harris first studied at the Complutense University of Madrid . After their return from Spain it acquired in 1979 at Agnes Scott College in Decatur the Bachelor of Arts . Subsequently she worked as a real estate agent. In 1996 she attended Harvard University , where she graduated with a Master of Public Administration .

From 1994 to 1998 she was a member of the Florida Senate . In 2000, she was in Florida in the government of Governor Jeb Bush Secretary of State (comparable to the office of Home Secretary) and played an important role in the controversial abortion of the vote recount of the 2000 US presidential election in her state, which was decisive. She was the last elected Secretary of State as this cabinet position has been filled by appointment since a constitutional amendment in 1998.

From 2003 to 2007 she was a member of the US House of Representatives , where she represented the 13th  congressional electoral district of the state of Florida. As a Republican candidate for the United States Senate in 2006, she was defeated by Democratic nominee Bill Nelson .
