Andrew Poysell "Andy" Ireland (born August 23, 1930 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is a former American politician . Between 1977 and 1993 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Andy Ireland first attended private schools in his hometown of Cincinnati and then until 1948 the Phillips Academy in Andover ( Massachusetts ). In the following years he studied first until 1952 at Yale University , then until 1954 at Columbia University in New York City and finally until 1959 at Louisiana State University . Ireland worked as a consultant and businessman and had been in the banking industry since 1954. Until 1970 he held leading positions at various banks in Florida.

Politically, Ireland was then a member of the Democratic Party . From 1966 to 1968 he was a member of the Winter Haven parish council . In the 1976 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of Florida , where he succeeded James A. Haley on January 3, 1977 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . Since 1983 he represented the tenth district of his state there as the successor to Louis A. Bafalis . On July 5, 1984 Ireland changed its party affiliation and became a Republican member . During his time as Congressman, he was also a delegate to the United Nations in 1981 .

In 1992 Ireland decided not to run again. As a result, he withdrew from politics. Today he lives in Boca Grande .
