Paul Grant Rogers (born June 4, 1921 in Ocilla , Georgia , † October 13, 2008 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician and represented the state of Florida as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

Paul Grant Rogers was born on June 4, 1921 in Ocilla, Georgia. He attended the University of Florida and graduated there in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts . When the United States entered World War II, Rogers enlisted in the United States Army . There he then served from 1942 to 1946. After the war, he attended George Washington University Law School, but did not receive his doctorate there. He received his law degree in 1948 instead at the University of Florida College of Law ( Levin College of Law ). He then opened his own practice and began to work there. He was also a board member of Merck & Co. and Mutual Life Insurance Co. in New York .

Rogers was elected a Democrat in an extraordinary election to the eighty-fourth Congress to fulfill the mandate vacated by the death of his father, Dwight L. Rogers . Subsequently, Rogers was elected to eleven subsequent congresses. His tenure lasted from January 4, 1955 to January 3, 1979. After that, he decided not to run for the ninety-sixth Congress.

During his time in the House of Representatives, he was involved in the 1956 constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. He also had a seat on the Subcommittee on Health and the Environment from 1971 to 1979 . He was even nicknamed “Mr. Health ”. He was a key MP behind the introduction of the National Cancer Act of 1971, the Medical Device Amendment of 1976, the Health Maintenance Organization Act , the Emergency Medical Service Act , the Medicare-Medicaid Anti-Fraud and Abuse Amendment of 1977, and the Clean Air Act from 1970.

Rogers was a resident of West Palm Beach , Florida. He was a partner in the Washington, DC based office of Hogan & Hartson . He was also active in the National Osteoporosis Foundation , Friends of the National Library of Medicine and the National Leadership Coalition on Health Care.

He received various honors, including

  • 1993 the Albert Lasker Award for Public Service ,
  • 1994 American Pharmaceutical Association Hugo H. Schaefer Award , AlliedSignal Achievement Award in Aging , Distinguished Leadership Award from the University of Florida Health Sciences Center,
  • 1995 National Osteoporosis Foundation Leadership Award , National Cancer Institute “Year 2000” Award, and Research! America 2005 Edwin C. Whitehead Award for Medical Research Advocacy.

In June 2001, by an act of Congress, the main plaza of the National Institutes of Health was named after him in his honor. In 2006, Research! America established the Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research , which honors Roger's dedication to health care policy and advocacy. Mark Foley said he was inspired to get into politics by a meeting with Rogers he had with him when he was three years old.
