John Mica

John L. Mica (born January 27, 1943 in Binghamton , New York ) is an American entrepreneur , politician of the Republican Party and since 1993 member of the US House of Representatives for Florida . After being voted out of office in 2016, he will leave Congress on January 3, 2017.

biography

After attending Miami-Edison High School , he first studied at Miami-Dade Community College , where he obtained an associate degree (AA) in 1965 . He then studied at the University of Florida and finished it in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then worked as an entrepreneur.

His political career began in 1977 as a member of the Florida House of Representatives ( Florida House of Representatives ), where he served as a representative of the Republicans to the 1981st He then worked until 1985 on the staff of Paula Hawkins , who was then newly elected Republican US Senator for Florida .

In 1992 Mica was elected for the first time as a member of the US House of Representatives and, after eleven re-elections so far, has represented the 7th congressional electoral district of Florida since January 3, 1993 . In the meantime, as the highest-ranking member of the Republican minority faction ( Ranking Minority Member ), he was opposition leader in the US House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure . His current term of office runs until January 3, 2017. In November 2016, he was defeated in a renewed candidacy against the Democrat Stephanie Murphy . He was a member of the United States House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, as well as two sub-committees.

His brother Daniel A. Mica was also a member of the US House of Representatives for Florida from 1979 to 1989.
