Vern Buchanan
Vernon G. "Vern" Buchanan (born May 8, 1951 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American politician . Since 2007 he has represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .
Career
After graduating from high school in 1969, Vern Buchanan served in the Michigan National Guard Air Corps for six years . He then studied at Cleary University in Ann Arbor and later until 1986 at the University of Detroit . In the following years Buchanan worked as a businessman in various industries. Among other things, he was involved in the printing industry and from 1992 in Ocala (Florida) in the auto trade. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .
In the 2006 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of Florida , where he succeeded Katherine Harris on January 3, 2007 . After four re-elections so far, he can still exercise his mandate in Congress today. His current term of office runs until January 3, 2017. After a constituency restructuring in Florida, he has represented the 16th constituency of his state in Congress since 2013.
Buchanan served on the Committee on Small Business , Transportation and Infrastructure, and the Veterans Committee, and six sub-committees. Since 2013 he has been a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and two sub-committees. In 2008 and 2009, the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics ethics group in Washington named him the most corrupt member of Congress because of controversial campaign funding. His first election in 2006 was very close and was only confirmed by another vote count. An election challenge was rejected. In 2008 and 2010, his election victories were much clearer. He was also re-elected in 2012 and 2014. Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019, with the option to run again in 2018. Buchanan has donated money to a number of youth organizations. He has received awards from a number of chambers of commerce and veterans' associations and has served as chairman of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce . In the meantime he was chairman of the Florida Chamber of Commerce and a board member of the US Chamber of Commerce in addition to his membership of parliament .
Vern Buchanan is married. He has two grown sons with his wife Sandra.
