Clifford Bundy "Cliff" Stearns (born April 16, 1941 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician . Between 1989 and 2013 he represented the state of Florida in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cliff Stearns attended Hearst Elementary School between 1946 and 1952 and then Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington until 1959 . He then studied electrical engineering at George Washington University in the American capital until 1963 . Between 1963 and 1967 he was an officer in the US Air Force , where he dealt with satellite technology. He later ran several motels and restaurants in northern Florida. He also worked temporarily as a technician for the television company CBS . For a short time he also worked in a number of other industries.

Politically, Stearns joined the Republican Party . In the 1988 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of Florida, where he succeeded Democrat Buddy MacKay on January 3, 1989 . After eleven re-elections, he was able to complete twelve legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2013 . In November 2010 it was confirmed with 71% of the vote. In the internal party primaries of 2012, Stearns lost in the third constituency of his state to Ted Yoho , who succeeded him in Congress.

Stearns has served on the Energy and Trade Committee , the Veterans Committee, and some of their sub-committees. He is married to Joan Moore, with whom he has two grown children.
