Charles Burton Mitchel (born September 19, 1815 in Gallatin , Sumner County , Tennessee , † September 20, 1864 in Little Rock , Arkansas ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who formed the state of Arkansas in the Senate in 1861 and then represented in the Confederation Congress after secession , where he worked until his death.

Career

Mitchel attended college , then graduated from the University of Nashville in 1833, and then graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1836 . He then moved to Washington , Arkansas, where he practiced as a doctor for 25 years . He also decided to pursue a political career. He held a seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives for a year in 1848 . He later served as a trustee of public funds from 1853 to 1856. He then ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives in 1860 .

In the same year he was elected to the US Senate, where he stayed from March 4, 1861 to July 11, 1861, before resigning from his seat. His resignation coincided with the withdrawal of Arkansas from the Union. Mitchel was at the first meeting State Legislature in the Senate of the States Confederate chosen where he remained until his death on 20 September. 1864 His body was then transferred to his hometown in Washington, Arkansas, where he was eventually buried.
