Allen Taylor Caperton (born November 21, 1810 in Monroe County , Virginia , †  July 26, 1876 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He represented the state of West Virginia in the US Senate and was a Senator for Virginia in the Confederate Congress .

Life

Allen Caperton, whose father Hugh Caperton was also politically active and was a federalist in the US House of Representatives from 1813 to 1815 , was born in what is now West Virginia. Age of 14 he attended school in Huntsville ( Alabama ). He later graduated from the University of Virginia and Yale College . After studying law at Staunton , he was admitted to the bar and began practicing law.

Caperton was initially politically active in both chambers of the state legislature of Virginia: in the House of Representatives from 1841 to 1841, in the Senate from 1844 to 1848. Another term in the House of Representatives followed between 1857 and 1861. In 1850 and 1861 he was a delegate to the state's constitutional convention.

During the Civil War , the Virginia Parliament elected him to the Confederate Senate , where he succeeded the late William B. Preston on January 22, 1864 and remained until March 18, 1865. After the war, he was the first former confederate politician to be elected to the US Senate. He took up his mandate as representative of West Virginia from March 4, 1875, but died the following year in Washington.
