Nathan B. Scott
Nathan Bay Scott (born December 18, 1842 in Quaker City , Guernsey County , Ohio , † January 2, 1924 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of West Virginia in the US Senate .
After attending public schools, Nathan Scott worked in the mining industry near Colorado Springs from 1859 to 1862 . During the Civil War he joined the Union Army and rose from corporal to sergeant ; In 1865 he still held the post of provisions master in his regiment. In the same year he left the army.
Scott became a businessman in Wheeling, West Virginia , after the war . He was active in glass manufacturing and banking. Between 1881 and 1883 he also held his first political office as a member of the Wheeling City Council; subsequently he was a member of the West Virginia Senate until 1890 . In 1888 he was also a member of the Republican National Committee .
In 1898, Scott was of US President William McKinley appointed head of the tax authority ( Commissioner of Internal Revenue appointed). As early as February of the following year, he resigned from this post after he had been elected to the US Senate for the Republicans. After being re-elected, he remained in Congress from March 4, 1899 to March 3, 1911 , before his party did not nominate him a third time as a candidate. During his time in the Senate, he was, among other things, Chairman of the Mining Committee .
After his political career, Nathan Scott was appointed to the Lincoln Memorial Commission in 1911 . He was also active in banking in Washington until his death in 1924 .
