Charles James Faulkner (born September 21, 1847 in Martinsburg , Berkeley County , Virginia , †  January 13, 1929 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of West Virginia in the US Senate .

Life

Faulkner's father was also named Charles James Faulkner . By the time his son was born, he had already embarked on a political career; between 1851 and 1877 he served in the United States House of Representatives for Virginia and later for West Virginia . The younger Charles Faulkner was born on Boydville, his family's country estate in what is now West Virginia. In 1859 he accompanied his father to France , where the latter served as US ambassador until he was arrested in 1861 for negotiating arms purchases for the Confederation in Paris .

During his stay in Europe, Charles James Faulkner attended schools in Paris and Switzerland . Upon his return - by then the Civil War had already broken out - he continued his training at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington . In 1864 he took part in the Battle of New Market with the other cadets of the Academy . After the war ended, Faulkner graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1868 , where he was a member of the St. Anthony Hall student association . In the same year he was admitted to the bar and began practicing in Martinsburg. In 1880 he was elected judge of the 13th district court.

On March 4, 1887, Faulkner moved into the US Senate in Washington after a successful election . He remained there after re-election until March 3, 1899. During his time as Senator, he was among other things in front of the Committee on Territories . In 1898 he was appointed to the International Joint High Commission , in which he negotiated on the US side with British representatives on issues relating to the border with Canada . A little later he retired from public life and practiced as a lawyer in Martinsburg and Washington. He was also active in agriculture. Faulkner died in 1929 on his family's estate and was buried in Martinsburg.
