John D. Hoblitzell

John Dempsey Hoblitzell Jr. (born December 30, 1912 in Parkersburg , Wood County , West Virginia , †  January 6, 1962 in Clarksburg , West Virginia) was an American politician of the Republican Party who represented the state of West Virginia in the US Senate represented.

John Hoblitzell graduated from West Virginia University in 1934 . He then worked in several business areas, including the insurance industry, real estate trading and banking advertising; he also became the first president of the West Virginia Junior Chamber of Commerce . From 1942 to 1946 he served in the US Navy reserves and last held the rank of lieutenant . As a result, he took on several offices at the local and regional level: He was a member of the governing body of West Virginia University and the school board in Wood County. In 1954 he traveled to Washington as a delegate from his state to attend an educational conference at the White House . That same year, Hoblitzell became president of the West Virginia School Board Association.

Also in 1954, he was appointed chairman of a finance commission set up by the governor of the state. His first candidacy for public office was two years later, but his party did not nominate him as a candidate for election to the United States House of Representatives . For this he was appointed on January 25, 1958, to succeed the late US Senator Matthew M. Neely . Hoblitzell also stood in the by-election, but was defeated by the Democrat Jennings Randolph and had to leave the Senate on November 4th of the same year.

John Hoblitzell then withdrew from politics and went back to his business. On January 6, 1962, he suffered a heart attack, which resulted in his death.
