Robert Jemison

Robert Jemison, Jr. (born September 17, 1802 in Lincoln County , Georgia , † October 16, 1871 in Tuscaloosa , Tuscaloosa County , Alabama ) was an American politician in the 19th century .

Jemison served in the Alabama State Legislature from 1837 to 1863 . In 1861 he also represented the state of Alabama as a delegate at its secession convention , where he spoke out against the withdrawal of his state from the Union. After the outbreak of the American Civil War he served as a senator in the 1st and 2nd Confederate Congresses from 1863 to 1865 .

Professionally, Jemison was active in many areas. He owned six plantations in western Alabama covering approximately 4,000 hectares. He also operated stagecoach lines, sawmills and a hotel, among other things. He also had roads and bridges built and then charged fees for using them.
