John Wood Lewis

John Wood Lewis (born February 1, 1801 in Spartanburg County , South Carolina , †  July 11, 1865 in Canton , Georgia ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Georgia during the Civil War as a Senator in the Confederate Congress .

Originally from South Carolina, John Wood Lewis first became politically active in his home state when he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives between 1830 and 1831 . He later moved to Georgia, where he served on the State Senate in 1845 .

Lewis entered the first Confederate Congress on April 7, 1962. In the November election of the previous year, the mandate had originally gone to Robert Augustus Toombs ; However, the latter refused to accept it because the vote was only cast on him in the fifth ballot. The successor appointed Lewis left parliament on January 19, 1863 after Herschel Johnson had won the by-election.

Lewis witnessed the end of the Confederation on June 23, 1865; less than three weeks later he died in Canton, where he was buried.
