Canton is a city and also the county seat of Cherokee County in the US state of Georgia with 22,958 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Canton is about 25 miles north of Atlanta on the banks of the Etowah River .

history

The railroad reached Canton in May 1879 from Woodstock through the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad . In 1882 the section was opened up to Ball Ground . In the late 1950s in particular, poultry production played an important role. The city and county were also called the Poultry Capital of the World at the time. Canton was connected to the interstate network in 1985.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 22,958 inhabitants were distributed over 8,204 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.77 people per household. There are a total of 9,341 households.

68.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.30 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 42.4% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 18.6% of all households.

31.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 35.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 19.9% ​​were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 31 years. 49.2% of the population were male and 50.8% were female.

75.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 8.9% as African American , 0.8% as Indians and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 10.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.9% to several ethnic groups. 22.5% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 55,195 USD , while 19.2% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Canton is crossed by Interstate 575 and Georgia State Routes 5 , 20 , 140, and 205 . The town is on the Marietta to Blue Ridge railway line , which is operated by CSX on freight services. The airfield Cherokee County Regional Airport is located ten kilometers north east of downtown. The nearest international airport is Atlanta Airport (around 70 km south).
