William King Sebastian

William King Sebastian (* 1812 in Centerville , Hickman County , Tennessee , † May 20, 1865 in Memphis , Tennessee) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Arkansas in the US Senate .

Life

After graduating from college in Tennessee, William King Sebastian studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1835, after which he began practicing law in Helena , Arkansas; later he also worked there as a planter and grew cotton . From 1835 to 1837 he was employed as a prosecutor, between 1840 and 1843 he served as a judge at the circuit court ( Circuit court ) before he was appointed in the same capacity to the Arkansas Supreme Court .

In 1846 Sebastian was elected to the Arkansas Senate , which he chaired until 1847. After the death of US Senator Chester Ashley , he was appointed his successor in Washington, DC and took office on May 12, 1848; later he also won the official by-election. Sebastian also decided the re-elections in 1853 and 1859 for himself. During his time in the Senate, among other things, he was chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs .

Immediately after the outbreak of the civil war , Sebastian resigned from his Senate seat; the formal expulsion from the panel for support of the Confederation took place on July 11, 1861. He returned to Arkansas, where he worked again as a lawyer; in the newly founded state he no longer took on any political office. When the Union troops took Helena in 1864, Sebastian moved to Memphis. He died there the following year.

Appreciation

In 1877 the Senate withdrew the resolution to expel Sebastian from parliament; compensation was paid to his children. The Sebastian County , Arkansas is named after the former senator.
