The Arkansas Supreme Court is the Supreme Court of the US state of Arkansas .

composition

In 1836 Arkansas became the 25th state to join the Union of the United States . Its first constitution created a Supreme Court composed of three judges, including a chief judge-designate. At the same time, the Arkansas General Assembly was directed to elect these judges. Daniel Ringo , Townsend Dickinson, and Thomas J. Lacy were selected as first Supreme Court Justice. Ringo became the first chief judge.

The current constitution of the state, ratified in 1874, also initially provided for three Supreme Court justices, but also authorized the Arkansas General Assembly to increase the number of justices to five if deemed necessary once the population of the Arkansas State should be one million. In 1889 the number of Supreme Court justices increased to five. In 1924, the constitution was amended to allow the General Assembly to increase the number of judges to seven if necessary. In 1925 the number increased to the still current number of seven judges, whose term of office began on January 1, 1927.

Judge

Current Chief Justice is John Dan Kemp . This was chosen in the 2016 election.
