After Governor Pope and President Jackson had drifted apart politically, Pope was no longer confirmed in office in 1835. Jackson named Fulton in his place as the new and final territorial governor. But he couldn't get his way on the question. Arkansas became the 25th state of the United States on June 15, 1836, following the adoption of a constitution and its recognition by Congress .
