Arkansas Governor

When the incumbent Governor Thomas Stevenson Drew resigned on January 10, 1849, Richard Byrd had to administer his office as President of the Senate. His only job was to call a new election for the office of governor. This took place on March 14, 1849. On April 19 of the same year, the newly elected Governor John Selden Roane was inaugurated . This ended Byrd's brief tenure.

Byrd now withdrew from politics. He was doing business in Jefferson County and died in 1854.
